In general you will be able to install VMware products on most linux distros. The supported distros will however let you install your VMware product without much hassle. Some commercial distros have free counterparts and also these will typically be as easy to install on, but you might be required to recreate your issues on a supported system if you file a Service Request.

In general linux kernels up to 2.6.24 will typically work without additional tweaks. For newer kernels you might be able to find a prebuilt module at VMware download or you might be able to find a working patch at the vmkernelnewbies file area.
